The movie theater industry finds itself in turmoil due to the ongoing saga of Paramount's suggested takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery. Cinema United, the primary lobbying group for the exhibition industry, has been publically opposed to any sale of Warner Bros. The group's president, Michael O’Leary, fears a merger might lead to production cutbacks and potential cinema closures. However, AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas, the two most influential members, are advocating for the billion-dollar deal.

This internal disagreement threatens the future bargaining power of Cinema United's smaller exhibitors. One regional exhibitor articulates, “Leadership can’t control the big guys, and it makes us all look like clowns. How do studios take you seriously if they don’t know who is running the ship?” Despite this, O’Leary remains adamant about their responsibility to the entire exhibition community and would continue to seek opportunities for the industry's protection.

AMC's CEO, Adam Aron, has been a longtime supporter of the merger, stating that the unified company could empower the theatrical business. This public support deviates from O’Leary's attempts to endorse legal action against the merger, further deepening the strife within Cinema United.

While Hollywood revels in its largest summer season since the onset of COVID-19, many believe this ambiguous merger could bring unwanted uncertainty. With Regal Cinemas also endorsing the deal, Cinema United stands on the brink of internal discord.

Aron and Acuna seem favorably disposed to the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger because Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison promised the merged studio would release at least 30 films annually. However, O’Leary and others remain skeptical about the legitimacy of this pledge considering the joint company's significant debt burden and cost-cutting plans.

The tension escalates as more than 90% of Cinema United members operate fewer than 75 screens, leaving the smaller independent theaters feeling vulnerable amid this consolidation. As the cinema industry grapples with the potential aftermath, the controversial merger ignites the battle of survival for smaller cinema businesses.
