- Aug 7, 2025
"Pyre", a piercing drama directed by Vinod Kapri, has become an international sensation, bagging numerous audience awards at film festivals around the globe. The story revolves around an aging couple ravaged by loneliness in the unforgiving landscapes of the Indian Himalayas. The film has scooped up top honors at the London and Birmingham Indian Film Festivals.
The cinematic journey of "Pyre" began at the 28th Tallinn Black Nights International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere and won the Best Film Audience Choice Award. After its successful stint in Tallinn, the drama had its Indian première at the 16th Bengaluru International Film Festival, earning a jury's special mention in the Asian Cinema Competition. It also had a notable presence at New York’s Indian Film Festival and the 12th MOOV Film Festival in Belgium.
Recently, the film has garnered five international awards in a single week. This hot streak started at the 22nd Asian Summer Film Festival in Spain on July 19. "Pyre” then headed to the British Isles, where it made an appearance at the London Indian Film Festival and later at a screening in Birmingham. In both cities, the film was honored with the Best Film Audience Award. The film's triumphant run continued in Germany at the 22nd Indian Film Festival Stuttgart, where it won the coveted Grand Jury Best Feature Film Award.
The movie's plot centers on an elderly couple, Padam and Tulsi, grappling with desolation and uncertainty in a rapidly changing Himalayan village. The film takes a dramatic turn when they receive a letter from their long-lost son after 30 years of silence, fueling them with a renewed desire to persist.

"Pyre" brings the charms of the Himalayas to the silver screen with lead roles played by non-professional actors Padam Singh, 80, and Heera Devi, 70. Their stellar performances add authenticity to the narrative of displacement and resilient love. A talented international team, including Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna, accompanied Kapri in developing the film. The film's soundtrack was penned by renowned lyricist Gulzar, further enhancing its emotional depth.
Vinod Kapri shared his joy over the resounding success of the film at some of the significant film festivals. He remarked the recognition is particularly heartwarming because it highlights the extraordinary talent of the elderly non-professional actors from the Indian Himalayas.
Audiences worldwide have another chance to witness this impactful drama as it lands in Australia for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in August.
