In a recent interview with The Guardian, Sean Astin, best known for portraying Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson's globally successful 'The Lord of The Rings' trilogy, revealed that he faced financial struggles during the height of his fame. Despite the $2.9 billion global box office earnings across 2001-2003, the actor earned a surprisingly small salary which forced him to sell his house. Astin shared, "I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access, and there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had. I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy.”

The actor mentioned that due to the unique filming approach – the entire trilogy was shot at once – there was no opportunity for the cast to renegotiate their salaries based on the success of each film. Elijah Wood, Astin's 'Rings' co-star, highlighted that this arrangement wasn’t necessarily a lucrative scenario that would ensure financial security for life.

In previous interviews, Astin disclosed that he earned about $75,000 per movie, making his total 'Rings' paycheck around $250,000. Meanwhile, co-star Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas, acknowledged that he was paid only $175,000 for the trilogy.

Despite this, the integrity of the experience was not lost on the actors. Elijah Wood conveyed, “The benefit of that was that we were also signing up for something that was going to be a part of our lives forever.”

Speaking about the upcoming 'Lord of The Rings' projects – including 'The Hunt for Gollum,' directed by Andy Serkis, and another in collaboration with Stephen Colbert, Astin stated that though his involvement is not yet confirmed, “Goddamn right” he will fight for better pay.
