"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" Breaks Opening Day Box Office Record

In a phenomenal display, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" set the record straight at the domestic box office. The movie grossed a staggering $168 million from 4,487 North American screens on its release day, Friday, marking the biggest opening day in history for a domestic film. This feat topples the former record set by 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," which took in $157 million on its first day. Sony anticipates the film's earnings to hit $325 million by Sunday, however, competing estimates place the sum as lofty as $358 million. This astronomical figure, if achieved, would crown "Brand New Day" with the title of the largest North American debut ever.

"Endgame" is also the current record holder for the best domestic opening, capturing $357 million. The runner-up is 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" with a $260 million debut. The third spot belongs to 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War" with $257 million, trailed by 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $247 million.

In the preceding "Spider-Man" film, "No Way Home," Tom Holland as Peter Parker convinces Doctor Strange to erase everyone's memory, so no one on Earth recognizes him. In "Brand New Day," Peter has to contend with isolation from his closest allies, including MJ, his girlfriend (Zendaya), and Ned, his best friend (Jacob Batalon). The star-studded cast for "Brand New Day" features Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Tramell Tillman.

Friday's second place was taken by “The Odyssey,” which garnered $14.5 million as it went into its third weekend in North American cinemas. The film is projected to reach $51 million by Sunday (a 43% dip from previous week) boosting its domestic total to $395 million. "Toy Story 5" stood third on Friday with a domestic earning of $1.8 million. It is eyeing an estimated $6.2 million by Sunday, elevating its North American yield to $461 million through four release weekends. The rest of the top five includes "Minions & Monsters" and "Moana." "Minions & Monsters" landed in fourth, contributing $1.66 million on Friday with an anticipated $5.6 million by Sunday, taking its overall domestic earnings to $168 million through five weekends. "Moana" snatched the fifth position with $1.6 million domestically on Friday expecting a weekend gross of about $5.3 million, which will surge its domestic proceeds to $114 million through four weekends.
