The Unveiling of "The Trial of Alec Baldwin" Documentary Trailer

Oscar-nominated director Rory Kennedy’s much-anticipated documentary, “The Trial of Alec Baldwin,” has released its trailer. The film is a comprehensive examination of the actor following the unexpected on-set discharge of a prop gun, resulting in the demise of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. It is slated for a North America-wide release in cinemas from October 16.

The documentary’s official description reveals that following the unfortunate event, initial feelings of accident and trauma were quickly replaced by debates on accountability, guilt, blame, penalty, and justice in media discourse, thanks in part to Baldwin’s fame and infamy. The New York-based actor becomes a flashpoint for online backlash and intrusive press, with legal authorities mulling over criminal charges. Subsequent events focus less on the case details, and more on Alec Baldwin as an individual, and a high-profile public figure.

Kennedy started filming Baldwin in 2023, after initially approaching him post-incident. Despite early reluctance, Baldwin granted the director full access to his life during the trial period. They commenced filming the documentary even before Baldwin was aware that Santa Fe County prosecutors had dismissed two counts of involuntary manslaughter against him. The filmmaking continued while Baldwin faced his trial in July 2024.

Kennedy acknowledged the sensitive nature of the story, empathizing with Halyna, the victim, and her family, but also noting the possibility of multiple victims in varying contexts. The documentary’s exploration of victims was appreciated during its premiere at the 2025 DOC NYC film festival. It was produced by Kennedy, Mark Bailey, and Julia Marchesi; Jared Underwood, Andrew C. Robinson, Colin Marshall, Todd Thompson, Rita Powers, Tanner Cusumano, Rob Guillermo, Ray Maiello, Louis Krubich, Dan Fried, Randy Jones Toll, and Steven Toll served as executive producers.
