Tom Hardy Excels in Netflix's Action Thriller "Havoc"
- May 2, 2025
The latest offering from Netflix, an action thriller entitled "Havoc," brims with explosive violence, unmistakably marking it as a production of Gareth Evans. The Welsh writer-director is known for his signature bold, bloody scenes and unflinching martial arts combat, as made famous by bouts in "The Raid" and its sequel.
"Havoc" bears the hallmarks of Evans' intense style and sees veteran actor Tom Hardy delivering a memorable performance as Walker, a beleaguered homicide detective grappling with the dark underbelly of an unnamed US city. Hardy's portrayal of a troubled cop steeped in corruption and disillusionment is convincing, wielding his physical presence and acting skills to bring depth to the character.
Despite having some familiar plot elements and character archetypes, "Havoc" effectively uses these to set the stage for action-packed sequences. The narrative revolves around Walker's haunting decision during a failed drug bust and its subsequent effects. The film launches into a quick-paced chase, seemingly random at first, leading to the unveiling of a sinister underworld.

Characters played by Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant, Serhat Metin, Quelin Sepulveda, and Justin Cornwell among others, contribute to a suspenseful storyline marked with tricky twists and turns. New faces like Jesse Mei Li, Sunny Pang, and MMA fighter Michelle Waterson also deliver compelling performances, adding a fresh dynamic to the film.
One highlight of the film is an extended fight sequence set in a nightclub – a classic Evans move. The pulsating techno music echoing as the combat erupts and the ensuing bodies drop is reminiscent of unforgettable scenes in "The Raid" and "John Wick." The film is visually impressive with dynamic cinematography by Matt Flannery, filled with vivid colors that add to the grim atmosphere evoked by the unnamed city, constructed mainly in a Cardiff studio.
"Havoc" embraces its element of ultra-violence, making it a choice pick for those seeking a cinematic adrenaline rush, with Tom Hardy steering the way. Despite its familiar plot mechanics being secondary, it’s the raw action and ensuing mayhem that make this thriller a must-watch.
