Unraveling the Irony of Luck in Lloyd Lee Choi’s “Lucky Lu”

Lloyd Lee Choi's debut drama, "Lucky Lu", is loaded with rich irony. While its lead character, Lu, seems to be the most unfortunate individual in New York, the movie grapples with the concept of fortune in an environment where survival of the fittest is the game. Lu, a Chinese immigrant portrayed by Chang Chen (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), navigates a tumultuous life, exploring whether luck equates to wealth and material possessions or love and companionship.

Drawing inspiration from the Italian neorealist classic Bicycle Thieves, the film's narrative takes a unique turn after Lu's delivery bike is stolen. Unlike a typical race-against-time story, this becomes an in-depth analysis of both character and location.

Despite the challenging times for indie films, Lucky Lu premiered in the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes. Although set prior to Donald Trump's second term in office, the film is still relevant in its portrayal of the struggles of immigrants like Lu, who battles to keep his head above water as his family moves from China to the United States.

The chain of events in one day reveals Lu's perilous journey to secure an apartment after losing his deposit to a deceitful broker and having his electric bike stolen. Choi's script powerfully captures Lu's life, reflecting a world of transactions, deceit, and isolation. His only consolation lies in his family, who stick by his side despite their challenging circumstances.

Choi skillfully oscillates between Lu and his daughter, Yaya's perspectives. In one emotionally charged scene, Yaya swipes a luxury watch from an open house, offering a glimpse into her understanding of the desperate predicaments her father unwillingly detests.

Lucky Lu is a compelling drama that showcases a realistic view of the world. Filmed on-location in Manhattan, the film paints the city as stark and uninviting. The film's backdrop is filled with loneliness and deprivation, devoid of dream-come-true moments. Despite Lu's flawed character, the film highlights his humanity. In accepting his harsh reality, he pivots his focus on what's important. With hard work, and perhaps a bit of luck, Lu may find his piece of paradise in the city.
