Documentaries typically narrate the story behind long-standing establishments, especially in vibrant cities like New York. Nevertheless, "Veselka: The Rainbow on the Corner at the Center of the World" transcends the usual storytelling. What started as a documentary about Veselka, a renowned Ukrainian restaurant in NYC, evolved into a narrative with a broader scope during its production, when war broke out in Ukraine.

This film uncovers the deeper emotional connection to this restaurant, proving that its significance expands beyond its culinary delights. Initially, "Veselka" seems to be a typical history documentary, introducing the viewers to the rich Ukrainian roots of this eateries, orchestrated under Michael Fiore’s direction.

However, as the film progresses, it introduces an understated yet poignant element; one of the restaurant's cooks discusses his losses from the war in Ukraine. This powerful moment is masterfully captured by Fiore, showcasing how global events, too distant for most, can influence people's everyday lives.

Veselka: The Rainbow on the Corner at the Center of the World (2024) — Documentary Review

One of the central figures in the film is Vitalii, a manager at Veselka, who tirelessly works to extricate his mother from war-torn Ukraine to Poland while engaging in charity works. While these efforts are commendable and effective in raising awareness, they often do not translate into concrete solutions, a harsh reality the film refuses to gloss over.

David Duchovny's narration, unfortunately, detracts certain depth from the film by excessively reiterated already evoked emotions. Nonetheless, the film's overall approach, which refrains from sugar-coating, manipulative tactics, or forced emotionalism, shines through.

“Veselka: The Rainbow on the Corner at the Center of the World” has been screening across various locations and is set to make its appearance at the Hot Docs festival. This heartfelt documentary is a must-watch for its unprecedented take on personal stories impacted by global affairs.
