We saw it last month with the Toyota, but Chevrolet is rolling out their own version of an electric pickup truck with the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV. The truck debuted at CES 2022 this month with a 6-figure price tag. Let’s look at the details!

Overview

With Ford and Toyota already well into the electrical pickup truck foray, it’s time for Chevrolet to follow suit.

The new model debuted this month at CES, but won’t hit dealership floors until 2024. It will be available only in two trims: the fully loaded, consumer-oriented RST (Rally Sport Truck) First Edition, and then pared-down, fleet-centric WT (Work Truck).

Design

The new Silverado EV’s design is going to look pretty similar to the most recent generation of General Motors body and chassis.

The front will have that thin strip of running lights that covers the entire width of the truck. However, unlike the large Silverado 1500 and 2500, the EV won’t have a large combustion engine to deal with. Which means the front hood is relatively smaller and narrower.

The back gets a little interesting. There is a new addition of buttressing between the cab and the bed, similar to the Avalanche look. The bed is outfitted with GM’s MultiFlex Tailgate, as well as the new Midgate. Available on the RST, this allows owners to carry even longer loads, up to 9 feet long.

Overall, the truck is larger than you’d expect for an electric version with wheels that are 24 inches.

Powertrain and Charging

All variants of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV will ride on GM’s Ultium platform and have batteries that will deliver 400 miles of range.

The RST has a higher range with its Wide Open Watts mode, the Silverado EV RST will generate up to 664 horsepower and 780 pound-feet of torque. The Silverado EV WT is downrated a bit at just 510 hp and 615 lb-ft.

The truck will also be able to feed power to tools or other items at a jobsite or campsite, with 10 outlets offering up to 10.2 kW of juice.

And if you thought electric meant less power, that’s not the case. The RST will be capable of towing up to 10,000 pounds and hauling up to 1,300 pounds in its bed, while the numbers on the WT are a little lower at 8,000 pounds and 1,200 pounds, respectively.

Tech

The electric model is also going to be fully loaded with all the technical gadgets you could hope for. The Chevy Safety Assist comes standard on both models. It includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning and automatic high beams.

It also includes trailer-capable Super Cruise, which will allow hands-free operation of the Silverado EV on pre-mapped highways across the US.

In the interior, we see an infotainment screen that measures 17 inches, with an extra 11-inch configurable gauge display.

Pricing and Release

The WT work model will be the first to go on sale with deliveries starting in 2023, although no official date yet. Rumored starting price for the basic model will be $39,000 pre-shipping.

The RST will come later in the year with the much, much larger price tag at $105,000 pre-shipping. Later models will be more middle-range at affordable prices.
