As we head into 2021, that means it’s time for New Year’s resolutions to start kicking in, and one of the tried and true resolutions for many people is to get in better shape. It’s trickier than ever this year, as the typical step of getting a gym membership or making use of the one you already have may not be an option as the new year begins.

But, this doesn’t have to derail those new fitness goals, it may just mean you need to start building or add on to your home gym setup. We’ve written before about some key components to a versatile home gym, but for this article, we’re going to focus more on one particular type of equipment you may want to add.

While there is a seemingly endless list of workout equipment you might consider for your home gym – a list that really grown in 2020, with more people than ever getting their exercise at home – one extremely versatile type of equipment is the traditional dumbbell. However, if you’ve noticed the dumbbell racks at your local gym, you may wonder how exactly you would fit all that equipment in your basement or garage in order to have a wide range of differently weighted dumbbells. Fortunately, folks in the fitness industry were thinking about this as far back as the 19th century, when some of the first truly adjustable dumbbells were invented. Since then, fitness technology has come a long way, providing some great options that are designed to meet different home workout needs. Here are two great options to consider for your home gym.

Bowflex SelecTech

Bowflex has a long history of making home gym equipment, so it is no surprise that they make this list. The Bowflex SelectTech dumbbell has been around for years and now comes in two variations – the 552 (ranging from 5-52 lbs) and the 1090 (which ranges from 10-90 lbs). Each one provides an easy weight selector to quickly adjust each dumbbell.

If you are looking for a system that allows you to lift heavier weights, then the SelectTech 1090 is a strong contender, as many other products do not include weights up to 90 lbs.

Powerblock

The Powerblock is a little odd-looking, compared to the other adjustable dumbbell products. But, behind that unique design is a very customizable platform, that allows you to purchase expansion kits that allow you to add more weight. Not all of their products can be expanded, so make sure you take that into account when ordering your first set of Powerblock dumbbells.

You can also choose from Sport, Elite, Pro, and Commercial Pro series products, each offering different weight ranges and options for expansion. They also come at different prices, ranging from $159/pair for the smallest Sport options to the Commercial Pro, which can run as high as $2,000.
