Discover the Thrills of Apple’s “Unconditional”
- May 9, 2026
Apple’s thriller, “Unconditional” follows the journey of mother Orna Levy, played by Liraz Chamami, after her daughter Gali, portrayed by Ronn Talia Lynne, is arrested and subsequently disappears in Russia’s carceral system. Orna embarks on a quest to find her daughter and unravel the mystery of her arrest, aided by showrunners Adam Bizanski and Dana Idisis who skillfully blueprint an engaging story filled with unexpected twists.
Despite the cliché of a mother’s unconditional love, “Unconditional” diverges from the norm. The portrayal of Orna, who seems to achieve breakthroughs that even Russian oligarchs, Indian police, and Israeli spies cannot, is perplexing but entertaining. The plot barely scratches the surface of Orna’s backstory, leaving much of her character development up to interpretation and mystery.
Joining Orna in her quest are friends who appear conveniently resourceful – an expert in PR and an ex from the secret service. Their presence, while purposeful, fails to deeply explore Orna's character. Yet, Orna's transformation from a passive character to an assertive force– able to confront government officials, media personalities, or even mobsters, and discern the truth from lies, is noticeable and remarkable. This plot construct indigenous to “Unconditional” sets the stage for an avalanche of moral dilemmas.
"Taken”, Liam Neeson’s 2008 film, has popularized this genre of parental instincts overpowering any obstacles to protect families. Yet, “Unconditional” stands itself apart by offering a thought-provoking narrative that doesn't shy from questioning the morality of the characters.

In the series, Orna views her arrested daughter as an innocent victim, however, as she digs deeper into the mystery of her arrest, she is forced to scrutinize who Gali is and grapple with the fact that she raised this person. Despite these shocks, Orna’s love for her daughter remains constant, showing the true nature of unconditional love.
This emotional rollercoaster ride is intensified in the series by the portrayal of Israeli identity, compulsory military service, and the intelligence community. Neither the Israelis nor the Russians are given a moral high ground, making for an intense and thought-provoking plot.
While this series isn't perfect, its ability to present complex moral questions and its intense plot make for a compelling watch. “Unconditional” is clever and enthralling, demanding your full attention and rewarding you with a narrative far tighter and more intriguing than most dramas can claim.
