Review, 'Mother Mary': Discovering the Underwhelming Enigma of

'Mother Mary', directed by risk-taking filmmaker David Lowery, is certainly high on style but weighted low on substance. In a tale oscillating between fantasy and reality, Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel's noteworthy performances can't quite save the film from its pretentious and monotonous core.
Hathaway shines as a global pop icon, embodying traits of real singing sensations like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Madonna. Coel, however, stealing the show, plays the enigmatic British designer, Sam Anselm. The film twists and folds in an aesthetic labyrinth where beautiful visual compositions cannot make up for a thin narrative structure.
Despite its impressive visuals that remind viewers of Tarsem Singh's films, the gothic melodrama is thinly spread, lacking emotional depth and complexity. Its leaning towards music video aesthetics rather than cohesive storytelling cripples the viewer's experience. Not even the trance-like original EDM tracks by Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA twigs, or Daniel Hart's score, could successfully veil the weak drama beneath.

As Haithway’s Mary seeks to make a comeback after a decade of estranged ties with Sam, tension mounts. A dressmaking challenge spirals into a twisted revelation of bitter, unresolved past conflicts. The underwhelming plot takes a confusing turn into the fantastic, with visions and spirits and unearthed memories. The perhaps metaphorical representation of a convoluted relationship remains ambiguous.
Struggling to handle her public image, Hathaway portrays Mary as a jittery artist who, despite her sincere efforts, fails to add depth to the narrative. 'Mother Mary' attempts to delve into the enigma of pop superstardom, the creative intimacy needed to fuel inspiration, and the overwhelming experience of connecting with a massive audience - all wrapped in a visually striking package. However, the hollow plot and disconnected storytelling leaves viewers underwhelmed and longing for substance behind the glitz.
