Epic Adventures and New Characters in Anime Film 'Tears of the Azure Sea'
- May 2, 2026
Fans of the popular anime series "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" have been waiting with bated breath for the second standalone movie of the franchise, "Tears of the Azure Sea". To those unaware, the anime series centres around an ordinary Japanese man who, after his demise, is reincarnated in a parallel universe as a peculiar slime with a unique gift of acquiring the abilities of others.
Throughout the series, the primary character, a slime named Rimura Tempest, evolves into a powerful leader of a diversified society, engaging in battles with dragons, demons, ogres, and a host of other mythological beings. In the series’ third instalment, Rimura extends his diplomatic powers, initiating dialogues with other nationalities, whilst governing his own, all while in his human-like form.
The latest film, though, doesn't require any prior watching of the previous chapters as its plot is rather basic. Set on a private island that belongs to the Celestial Emperor Elmesia and can only be reached via dragon-aided transportation, the storyline follows Rimura and his allies' invitation to the island. However, their peaceful retreat is interrupted by a runaway ocean princess, Yura, creating distress on the island.

Introducing new characters unseen in the series before, the film also surprises with an unexpected focus on Gobta – a minor character turned into an important figure. Usually drawn as a goblin, he is now turned into Yura's unexpected romantic interest. The film beautifully unfolds as a beautiful but doomed love story with dashes of franchise insider humour, palace plotlines and Yura's magical flute that governs their kingdom's dragon.
However, the plot may seem too typical for a franchise that revolves around a different protagonist. With Rimura playing the diplomat seemingly out of obligation, the narrative seems to lack genuine stakes. As the series' fourth season is still on the roll out during summer, "Tears of the Azure Sea" may feel like a minor detour rather than a major plot twist. Though the anime aficionados may relish the extra story crumbs, 'non-Slimeheads' may underappreciate this simplistic narrative.
