Netflix's upcoming drama "La Bola Negra" will be shown in movie theatres for a full month prior to its release on the digital platform. Scheduled for a big screen debut on November 6, the film will become available to stream on December 4. By opting for a fall premiere, Netflix is seeking to position "La Bola Negra" as a potential awards candidate. The film was a significant acquisition for Netflix at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was universally acclaimed and kindled a fierce competition for rights, eventually receiving Cannes' prestigious best director accolade.

This move represents one of Netflix's broader commitments to theatre screenings, indicating a shift in the company's strategy towards certain productions. Later in the year, the David Fincher directed "The Adventures of Cliff Booth", the anticipatory follow-up to Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," will enjoy a two-week exclusive IMAX run prior to its Netflix release. Furthermore, in 2027, Greta Gerwig's "Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew," will become Netflix's first film to experience a conventional theatre release.

An original creation of Spanish filmmaking duo, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, "La Bola Negra" portrays the sweep of 85 years of Spanish history through a LGBTQ+ lens. Set from the 1930s to the modern era, the plot is influenced by an unfinished composition from Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. Presenting a triptych of the lives of three men linked by their shared experiences, the narrative interweaves threads of aspiration, grief, and generational legacies. The cast includes Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente in his big screen debut, "Elite" actor Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Duenas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close.

In a statement, co-creators Calvo and Ambrossi celebrated their story's journey to Netflix, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to share their "story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility" with a global audience. They expressed hope that their story would help those who watch it to understand the courage and sacrifice of the generations who fought for the freedoms enjoyed in the present day, carrying forward the legacy of Federico García Lorca across the world.
