Olivia Wilde's new film, "The Invite," which she stars in alongside Penélope Cruz, Ed Norton, and Seth Rogen, hit theaters this weekend. This comedy drama has piqued interest due to its frank and relatable exploration of marriage, unfulfilled desires, and everyday struggles. The film, which managed to awaken a stagnant Sundance, was sold for more than $12 million to A24 for domestic distribution rights.

“The Invite” is the brainchild of screenwriters Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who translated the 2020 Spanish-language film “The People Upstairs” into a compelling portrait of marriage. Through honesty and authentic dialogue, Jones and McCormack captivate audiences with a story that mirrors their own experiences.

Themes covered in the movie include fertility, perimenopause, societal norms for masculinity, financial difficulties, female satisfaction and the common disappointments experienced in many marriages. The honest depiction of these issues deviates from the melodramatic presentations often seen in domestic comedies. The screenwriters collaborated with relationship expert Esther Perel to provide a well-rounded and realistic narrative.

Drawing a parallel to their own writing partnership, Jones and McCormack, who wrote the 2012 film “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” show appreciation for the nuances of relationships. They highlight the importance of acceptance and understanding in any successful relationship, whether it's a marriage or a creative writing partnership.

As "The Invite" prepares for its nationwide release, Jones and McCormack are already working on their next project, a feature-length "Tom and Jerry" romantic comedy for Warner Bros. Animation, proving that this writer duo is an unstoppable force in the entertainment industry.
