The long-anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada does not skimp on glamour, reimagining its iconic characters for fresh narrative directions while incorporating contemporary themes. David Frankel's follow-up, arriving two decades after the original, aptly delivers fan-favourite elements, drawing a light-hearted nostalgic tone over attempts to explore substance.

Unapologetic in its indulgence of luxurious lifestyles, the movie acknowledges its detractors while satiating its huge fan base. Returning to pen the story, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna adds relevancy through themes exploring the fading journalism industry and introducing a tech billionaire who seeks to acquire the film's Vogue counterpart, Runway Magazine. To some, these threads might feel thin and under-developed, but they do engage with contemporary concerns.

Other quirks of modernity are woven into the script - Miranda Priestly, played iconically by Meryl Streep, adheres to HR complaints and is saved from cultural insensitivity by her competent assistant. This does nothing to take away the bite from her famed disdain. There’s also a nod to the luxury real estate boom and its impact on New York City's housing crisis.

Amid its immersion in high-glamour and conspicuous wealth, the movie doesn't shy away from satirical elements. Various strands of the story also explore the struggle for media survival in the current digital age, with Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, delivering a passionate speech about journalism's importance over corporate greed.

Familiar faces from the original film effortlessly embrace their roles once again, while newcomers like Justin Theroux and Stanley Tucci add distinctive points of interest. On the whole, The Devil Wears Prada 2 indulges in its glossy exterior while attempting and partially succeeding in elevating the workplace comedy genre. Its success, while uncertain, hardly matters - it's bound to offer fans a captivating trip down memory lane, equalling a sizeable box office return.
