The Extraordinary Octopus and Unlikely Human Bonds

In the Netflix adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s acclaimed book, Remarkably Bright Creatures, a fair share of attention shifts from a remarkably cunning octopus, Marcellus (voiced by Alfred Molina), and falls instead on the evolving relationship between two humans in a picture-perfect seaside town.
Despite Marcellus’ astute observations and charming antics, the humans become the focus in this story that seamlessly shifts between a tale of wildlife and a human-centric narrative. Marcellus ponders the parallels between himself and Tova (Sally Field), the night janitor at the local aquarium. Both cherish the silence of the night, abhor wolfeels, and yearn for the deep depths of the sea – a metaphor for what they both have lost.
A twist of fate introduces a secondary protagonist to the story, Cameron (Lewis Pullman), a vagabond musician, whose presence instigates a campaign by Marcellus to help Tova heal from her deep-seated pain. Despite a sequence of convenient plot drivers, the film succeeds in weaving a warm and relatable story. Marcellus, through CGI-rendered charm and wit, maneuvers Tova and Cameron into each other's lives and creates a surrogate mother-son relationship that helps them both heal.

While the narrative at times seems to sideline the octopus in favor of human-centric plots, the underpinnings of the story-the complex, tender bond forming between the two humans-feels organic and sincere. Newman and Whittington’s script brings to life a charming coastal town filled with friendly residents, and injects humor and warmth into unexpected adventures.
In this novel adaptation, Remarkably Bright Creatures proves to be a heartfelt exploration of healing, camaraderie, and the power of bonds that transcend species-crafted against the backdrop of a picturesque coastal town that offers its own raw charm, long after the credits roll.
