The Sandman S1 E4, “A Hope in Hell” Recap

Dream and Matthew the Raven arrive in Hell at the start of The Sandman episode four. They choose to pursue the path of the Damned as chilly winds blow around them. But there are rules for entering Hell, and a demon named Squatterbloat, who welcomes them at the gates, is well versed in them.

The demon agrees to escort Dream to the Morningstar despite chastising him for lacking a crown. Precisely Lucifer Morningstar. The dream is more vulnerable now than before because Lucifer is much more powerful than him.

Dream is greeted by Lucifer, who wishes to unite their two realms. Dream, however, disregards this and continues to pursue his goal of getting his Helm back. Therefore, the only solution is to call every single demon to the gates.

Dream quickly ascertains that the Helm belongs to the Duke of Hell Choronzon. He haggles with the Demon while holding the Helm beneath his arm. Dream will spend all of eternity as Choronzon’s slave in Hell if he loses this.

Dream and Lucifer face off in Hell. The former informs Lucienne of his fate and instructs Matthew to return and visit her. In the meantime, Lucifer and Dream are engaged in a mental and intellectual duel. At a pivotal moment, Matthew offers Dream some words of encouragement, and the Lord of Dreams ultimately chooses “Hope” as his winning move. And with that, Dream receives his Helm back after defeating Lucifer.

Morpheus, one day we will destroy you,” Lucifer declares. Dream then turns and departs from Hell with his Helm.

As soon as John has the ruby in his possession, he is kind to Rosemary and gives her his Amulet. John makes a single commitment to her before he departs, which is to transform the world.
