Unraveling the Making of Netflix's Rom-Com Hit, “Voicemails for Isabelle”
- Jun 24, 2026
Leah McKendrick, the screenwriter and director of "Voicemails for Isabelle," the latest smash-hit rom-com from Netflix, shares an insider's perspective on the birth and evolution of this film that spent nearly eight years in development. Key plot points were carefully reworked, such as the intention of the character Wes (played by Nick Robinson) to reveal to Jill (portrayed by Zoey Deutch) the voicemails he was unexpectedly receiving - messages intended for Jill's late sister, Isabelle (Ciara Bravo).
The film centers on a romantic comedy mishap, leading to a meet-cute and a seemingly destined happily ever after. However, ensuring that the audience fully grasped that Wes wasn’t purposely exploiting an uncomfortable situation to win Jill’s affections was critical. McKendrick infused multiple moments throughout the film portraying Wes’ honorable intentions, even when they lead to painful misunderstandings.
One of the most significant empathy drivers towards Wes is the undeniable chemistry between Robinson and Deutch. McKendrick equates a considerable amount of engagement and empathy from the audience to the genuineness and sincerity Nick was able to bring on screen.
The central love story isn’t between Wes and Jill, but rather between sisters, Jill and Isabelle. Their bond, developed through countless voicemails and shared life experiences, influences Wes' love for Jill.

A peculiar moment in the film is Wes’ willingness to trade away an incredibly valuable "Black Lotus" card from Magic: The Gathering to help Jill. The addition of this plot point, involving Wes retrieving lost voicemails, was a surprising last-minute process.
However, not everyone was immediately onboard with this plot point; Robinson initially questioned the Magic: The Gathering angle. Nevertheless, once the scenes were shot, the cast warmed to the concept.
Beyond directing and writing, McKendrick also played the role of Breeda, one of Wes’ best friends. She admits that featuring herself in her films is an integral part of her creative process, as it fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared experience with her cast.
