Rebecca Hall stars as Claire, a 250-year-old artist, in Catalan writer-director Maria Martinez Bayona's debut feature, The End of It. In a near future that seems eerily plausible, Claire leads a seemingly immortal life thanks to advanced medical technologies, only accessible to a select few.

However, as the story unfolds, Claire, weary of eternity, chooses to die, causing variable reactions among her close acquaintances, including her husband Diego (Gael García Bernal), her 180-year-old daughter Martha (Noomi Rapace), and her android personal assistant Sarah (Beanie Feldstein). The script falters slightly in execution, with an overly long duration and occasional bouts of exaggerated satire, but the performances and visuals compensate for these drawbacks.

The film is primarily shot in the Canary Islands, illustrating a future where the globe's worst climate catastrophes are circumvented. Yet, living this seemingly blissful existence of immortality comes with strings attached. People don't die of now curable diseases or age, but from accidents or suicides.

The End of It: A New Era in Sci-Fi Comedy Drama

On the occasion of her 250th birthday, Claire, disenchanted with immortality and the monotony of her life, discontinue her life-preserving treatments. As she begins to age, her decision to die disturbs her social circle.

Only Martha, her daughter who appears after a 50-year absence, understands Claire's decision. For Martha sees Claire's death as a chance to inherit the status of a reproductive woman in their society and consequently brings a baby robot along for practice.

In the final act, Claire decides to publicize her impending death in a bid for future fame, which may strike viewers as selfish and vain. Despite some flaws in the script, Hall’s performance leaves a considerable emotional impact. The potential missteps in its narrations don't overshadow the skills of its young writer and director. The End of it seems to signal the start of Maria Martinez Bayona's promising career.
